Brian Otis

Brian Otis’ role on the Verily founding team was to push the frontier of medical device innovation, building out the device organization, leading the company's discovery and rapid prototyping efforts, and establishing large partnerships. Drawing inspiration from technological advances like the miniaturization of sensors and wearable devices that were revolutionizing consumer technology, Brian recognized that these innovations could help health professionals be more proactive in their treatment of disease. He brought deep electrical engineering experience to the world of life sciences, having served as an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington (UW). Brian also held positions at the UW Kelly Tremblay Brain and Behavior Laboratory, the UC-Berkeley Ralph Freeman Neuroscience Lab, the Berkeley Wireless Research Center, Intel and Agilent Labs. His knowledge in the field of low power integrated circuits for wireless sensors led to the development of early Verily technologies including the G7 continuous glucose monitor for partner Dexcom, a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline on the Galvani implantable therapeutic device, a set of assistive devices for eating that helped those with hand tremor or limited hand and arm mobility called Liftware, as well as the Verily Study Watch, an investigational device for capturing health information from clinical research participants that has been used by thousands of participants in clinical research studies run by Verily and through our partners.
